New Year, New Music Goals:
Tips for achieving your musical goals this year!
This year, make a resolution to invest in yourself or someone you care about by achieving your musical goals!
Why should people play music?
There are many reasons someone might want to take music lessons, including:
Improve musical skills
Improve non-musical skills such as self-discipline, creativity, confidence
Learn something new: keep brain and muscles active
Play the songs you love
Music provides a relaxing outlet
Music provides as many challenges as you’d like.
And some of my favorite answers are from our Student Spotlights:
Why should other people play music?
From Ben (age 12): “It brings joy to people.”
From Pete (adult student):“If you enjoy listening to music you will enjoy learning to play it even more.”
From Juni (age 2): “It’s fun!”

Choose what your goals are and talk with your teacher about some ideas. They’ll help you design a practice plan to help you achieve your goals.
Other awesome tips to help you achieve your goals between lessons:
Find out your reason for playing music.
If your goals are aligned with your reason for making music, you’ll succeed faster!
Be sure to share with your teacher your
Open your books!
When you get home, open your books to the right page, and put them on your music stand.
This will ease the resistance. If they are out of sight, they are out of mind.
Schedule time to make music.
Put your practice time on your calendar.
If you are helping kids, put the practice time on your family calendar where your kids can see it.
Turn music making into a habit that you do at a certain time each day.
Come up with a practice routine
What will you start with? Warm ups, new songs, easy songs, review songs, challenge songs? It’s easy to get started when you know what to do.
Hint: use our Music Assignment Notebooks, write down your repetitions or minutes (tally marks, etc.)
What will you finish with? Something fun as a reward or go through the end of your lesson assignment?
Make big goals, and then smaller goals
Create a big goal and then smaller goals.
For example, if you wanted to play in the recital in June, work backwards so you can plan what to do each month and each week.
Put your goals where you can see them
Studies show that if you write down your goals and put them where you can see them, and someone else can see them, then you’re more likely to achieve them.
Write down when you are going to make music on your calendar that other people can see.
