Connection through music

"What's your favorite dance?" was asked to random people on a TikTok video. The next clip showed people dancing their favorite dance from around the world. People were dancing all different styles, but what it showed you is the shared connection of the love of dancing and music.

I was recently at a piano recital by a friend of mine from grad school. The theme of the recital was moving from darkness to light, to hope - reflecting on the past couple years during the pandemic. He played music that was played so incredibly emotional without any words. I was moved to tears, knowing that through the last couple years people have felt a range of emotions. We have all felt this, all together, and individually as well. What struck me is looking around the room, everyone was having a shared experience of the music at the same time, each bringing their own experience, and connecting through music.

People come to music lessons for the fun, and learning new skills and songs they love. What they're also looking for is connection.

Connection to oneself

People are looking for the connection to the possibility of what can be achieved. Creativity, self-expression, perseverance and confidence can all be gained through making music.

Connection to others

Through music lessons, students gain a connection with others and connection leads to empathy toward others. If students are learning a piece of music about a place far away, or at a different point in time, they have the opportunity to learn more about what it's like there. What would it be like to live in someone else's shoes? Perhaps a parent or grandparent is sharing songs they love with their child - when the child hears that song, they'll remember their parent or grandparent.

Connection to something more

Music is so incredible, because in addition to connecting to oneself and connecting with others, music also reaches something more. It gives people the connection to something bigger than themselves - a shared human experience - to express things that words cannot.

Isn't that one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves, or someone we love? A connection to oneself, other people, and to a shared human experience?
